Join this fantastic, dedicated and all-around talented group of creators! Student Affairs Communications and Marketing (SACM), while a mouthful of a name, is an on-campus marketing team that completes creative projects for departments in JMU’s Student Affairs.
Our student employees gain hands-on experience with professional projects, media production and teamwork. They work with real-world clients in a supportive environment. Many of our students go on to work in the field of their choice, having many portfolio pieces to show in their applications.

General info
The team of student employees at Student Affairs Communications and Marketing complete creative projects to promote the programs, services and departments of JMU Student Affairs. As a Gallery Director you will curate and coordinate gallery shows and openings that will impact the wider JMU community.
Duties and responsibilities
- Manage the life cycle of The Union Gallery spaces, from recruiting and vetting photographers to coordinating gallery shows and openings, as well as maintaining additional artwork within Student Life buildings.
- Prepare for exhibits, including printing, framing, installing/deinstalling and creating signage.
- Marketing responsibilities, including advertising the opportunity to exhibit photography as well as upcoming openings.
- Document up-to-date exhibit progress and artist communication via our project management platform, as well as properly archive and maintain all digital files.
- Attend and actively participate in all weekly meetings and opening receptions.
- Assist in maintaining all equipment used by the team, including the Gallery computer, large-format printer, framing equipment, etc.
- Interact and collaborate with artists and Student Affairs professionals, both electronically and in person, with a professional and friendly demeanor.
- Other tasks may be assigned depending on availability of projects.
Required qualifications
- Appreciation for art/photography and interest in curating and coordinating exhibits
- Strong organizational skills, with the ability to coordinate and plan several simultaneous projects
- High attention to detail
- Ability to communicate well while remaining friendly and professional
- Ability to work well both independently and collaboratively
- Strong desire to learn
- As this is a skilled position, you may be required to demonstrate adequate skills in gallery curation and basic marketing strategy.
Preferred qualifications
- Knowledge of the Mac platform and basic Mac software
- Knowledge of basic photo editing
- Basic proficiency in InDesign, Photoshop and other Adobe Creative Suite software
- Additional experience in graphic design, photography, videography or writing

As a Graphic Designer you will serve our clients by designing print and digital materials that will influence and impact the wider JMU community.
Duties and responsibilities
- Conceptualize, design and deliver both print and digital material for clients as needed.
- Interact and collaborate with Student Affairs clients both electronically and in person with a professional and friendly demeanor.
- Document up-to-date project progress and client communication via our project management platform.
- Attend and actively participate in weekly meetings.
- Assist with sending projects for print on-campus and preparing files for print with off-campus vendors.
- Other tasks may be assigned depending on availability of projects.
Required qualifications
- Basic design and typography skills with an understanding of color theory, color relationships, space, composition and grid structures
- Strong organizational and problem-solving skills, with the ability to manage and execute multiple projects
- Ability to give and receive critique
- Ability to work well independently and collaboratively
- Proficiency with Adobe InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop
- High attention to detail
- Ability to complete projects on schedule
- Ability to communicate well and provide full transparency with clients
- Strong desire to learn
- As this is a skilled position, you will be required to submit a portfolio and demonstrate adequate knowledge of graphic design skills.
Preferred qualifications
- Knowledge of the Mac platform and basic Mac software
- Proficiency in After Effects and other Adobe Creative Suite software
- Basic knowledge of the print production process
- Preference to candidates who are majoring in Graphic Design
- Additional experience in illustration, animation, photography, videography or writing

As a Photographer you will serve our clients by producing imagery for use in web, print and promotional materials that will influence and impact the wider JMU community.
Duties and responsibilities
- Take and edit photographs of Student Affairs (and all departments within) and related events, as well as “Around Campus” general stock photography.
- Interact and collaborate with Student Affairs clients both electronically and in person with a professional and friendly demeanor.
- Document up-to-date project progress and client communication via our project management platform.
- Manage and organize image files according to department procedures, to include archival storage, exporting and Flickr.
- Properly handle and maintain SACM photography equipment and accessories.
- Attend and actively participate in weekly meetings.
- Other tasks may be assigned depending on availability of projects.
Required qualifications
- Ability to shoot and edit visually interesting photographs while adhering to an established style, with an understanding of composition, light, color and tone
- Proactive, able to work well independently and collaboratively
- Ability to give and receive critique
- Technical knowledge of photography—exposure settings, shooting in manual mode, when to use different lenses, etc.
- Strong organizational and problem-solving skills, with the ability to adapt to client needs
- Able to complete projects on schedule
- High attention to detail
- Ability to communicate well and provide full transparency with clients
- Strong design to learn
- As this is a skilled position, you will be required to submit a portfolio and demonstrate adequate knowledge of photographic production and postproduction skills.
Preferred qualifications
- Knowledge of the Mac platform and basic Mac software
- Skilled in Adobe Lightroom, Photoshop and other Adobe Creative Suite software
- Familiarity with Canon and Sony full frame and mirrorless cameras and lenses
- Preference to candidates with an appreciation for art and/or who are studying Art (concentrating in Photography) or SMAD (Journalism)
- Additional experience in either videography, graphic design or writing

Duties and Responsibilities
- Conceptualize, plan and create compelling stories and messages through audio and video.
- Interact and collaborate with Student Affairs clients both electronically and in person with a professional and friendly demeanor.
- Document up-to-date project progress and client communication via our project management platform.
- Manage and organize audio visual files according to department procedures, to include archival storage, temporary storage and YouTube.
- Properly handle and maintain SACM audio visual equipment.
- Attend and actively participate in weekly meetings.
- Other tasks may be assigned depending on availability of projects.
Required qualifications
- Ability to shoot and edit visually interesting videos while adhering to an established style, with an understanding of composition, light, color and tone
- Proactive, able to work well independently and collaboratively
- Ability to give and receive critique
- Experience with the filmmaking process, from preproduction through postproduction
- Technical knowledge of photography/videography—how to make lighting work to your advantage, how to use different lenses, film speed and exposure, posing, filters, exposure settings etc.
- Knowledge of film-specific equipment and techniques, such as cameras, audio equipment, tripods, etc., including both set-up and operation
- Strong problem-solving skills and adaptability to handle production adjustments on-site as needed, including being able to make quick decisions about which angle, technique, or equipment works best for a particular scene
- Ability to communicate well and provide full transparency with clients
- Strong desire to learn
- As this is a skilled position, you will be required to submit a portfolio and demonstrate adequate knowledge of video production and postproduction skills.
Preferred qualifications
- Knowledge of the Mac platform and basic Mac software
- Skilled in Adobe Premiere Pro, Audition, After Effects and other Adobe Creative Suite software
- Proficiency with color correction and animation
- Preference to candidates with an appreciation for art who are studying SMAD (particularly Digital Video and Cinema or Journalism)
- Preference to those who have been part of the SACM team for at least a year
- Additional experience in either photography, graphic design or writing
