The James Madison University Board of Visitors met Friday, January 7, 2011, in the Board Room of Madison’s Festival Conference and Student Center.  Following is a summary of actions taken by the board and key areas of discussion at the board meeting:

• Approved the October 1, 2010 Board meeting minutes;
• Received the President’s report presented by Dr. Linwood Rose;
• Received and approved committee reports from Audit, Development, Education & Student Life, and Finance & Physical Development.  The Athletic Committee did not meet;
• Received a presentation from Dr. George Sparks, Dean of the College of Visual and Performing Arts, on the Forbes Center’s Grand Opening plans;
• Received a presentation from Dr. Barry Falk, Director of the Honors Program;
• Received a presentation from Donna Harper, Executive Assistant to the President, on the university’s crisis management plan;
• Approved the Summer 2011 tuition and fees;
• Received a presentation on the Governor's 2011-2012 budget, presented by Mr. Charles King, Sr. Vice President for Administration and Finance;
• Approved the 2011-2012 budget amendments;
• Received an update from Rector Jim Hartman and Search Committee Chairman Joe Damico on the presidential search;
• Approved the policy changes regarding advanced placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) credits proposed by the Education and Student Life Committee;
• Approved changes to the military reinstatement policy submitted by the Education and Student Life Committee;
• Approved the university’s investment policy submitted by the Finance and Physical Development Committee.

•  that the Center for Multicultural Student Services celebrated their 25th anniversary;
• that the B.S. Degree in Sport and Recreation Management was approved by SCHEV;
• that JMU earned the Community Engagement Classification from the Carnegie Foundation;
• that Governor McDonnell's budget calls for a net improvement of $50 million in higher education funding but also with substantial changes in retirement contributions for employees;
• that JMU announced the Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) initiative;
• that the Governor's Commission on Higher Education released their report on December 3, 2010;
• that President Rose announced on December 10, 2010 that he would step down in June 2012;
• that Bill Jasien was the December Commencement speaker and there were 800 graduates;
• that Cross Country - ECAC and CAA Champions and Dave Rinker was named Coach of the Year;
• that Women's Soccer won the CAA Championship.
