The James Madison University Board of Visitors met Friday, April 1, 2011, in the Board Room of Madison’s Festival Conference and Student Center.
Following is a summary of actions taken by the board and key areas of discussion at the board meeting:
- Approved the January 7, 2011 BOV meeting minutes;
- Received the President’s report presented by Dr. Linwood Rose;
- Approved committee reports from Athletics, Audit, Education & Student Life, and Finance & Physical Development. The Development Committee did not meet;
- Heard a presentation on Impact3 (a leadership development program) by Dr. Mark Warner, Senior Vice President of University Affairs and University Planning, and Dr. Brian Charette, Assistant Vice President of Human Resources, Training and Performance;
- Heard a presentation on the Transportation plan presented by Mr. Don Egle, Director of Public Affairs;
- Received a General Assembly update from Mr. Charles King, Senior Vice President for Administration and Finance;
- While the university has received some new funding from the state there is still $19.2 million in revenue loss based on a

- Approved 2011-2012 tuition and fees
- Virginia undergraduate students will pay an additional $896 or 5.76% in total on-campus cost in 2011-2012.
- With the 2011-2012 tuition and fees increase, JMU’s total in-state and out-of-state costs remained positioned in the middle

- Approved the Six Year Capital Plan 2012-2018;
- Approved three real estate purchases:
- JMU Board Rector James Hartman announced that Greenwood/Asher & Associates has been selected as the search firm assisting JMU with its presidential search.
Was told by President Linwood H. Rose:
- that Economics professor Barkley Rosser and ISAT professor Robert Kolvoord received Outstanding Faculty Awards from SCHEV;
- that the Forbes Center Grand Opening in February was a tremendous success;
- that JMU’s Duke Battalion received the McArthur Award for 2010;
- that JMU was listed in Princeton Review’s Best Value Colleges for 2011;
- that JMU’s College of Business was ranked 28th in Bloomberg Businessweek;
- that JMU’s four-year graduation rate is in the top 10 in the nation;
- that the Alternative Spring Break Program had another successful year and included 400 students, 13 states, and seven countries
- that a JMU baseball bat was placed in the Hall of Fame in recognition of 23 home runs in a four-game series;
- that JMU’s women’s basketball were the CAA champions and appeared in the NCAA tournament;
- that Dawn Evans was named CAA Player of the Year.
