In today's world, reports of child sexual abuse are unfortunately not uncommon, and places once considered safe, such as schools, sports camps, and even churches, have been linked to potential abuse. To protect minors (under the age of 18) participating in activities at James Madison University (JMU), we have implemented policies to ensure their safety in programs and events held on university property.
Who Must Comply?
All Programs, Events, and Camps involving minors at the university, including athletic camps, academic camps, and other activities designed for youth. The policy affects a variety of individuals, including:
- Program staff (both paid and unpaid) 18 years or older who interact with, supervise, chaperone, or oversee minors.
- Faculty, staff, volunteers, graduate and undergraduate students, interns, temporary employees, independent contractors, JMU affiliates and JMU Non-affiliates who work directly with minors.
Authorized Adults are considered mandatory reporters of child abuse and neglect under Virginia law. Further details on mandatory reporting are provided in Policy 1406 - Reporting Suspected Child Abuse and Neglect.
For the purpose of this training, individuals meeting the above criteria are referred to as "Authorized Adults."
Authorized Adult Training
Please review the Authorized Adult Training Manual thoroughly before completing the Authorized Adult Training Quiz. Both resources are vital to ensure that you fully understand the safety guidelines and protocols in place to protect minors.
As an Authorized Adult, you are required to complete the training and quiz with 100% accuracy. Training results will be provided to the relevant PEC program directors.
