CHBS clinical settings offer students opportunities to learn in a hands-on, practical settings while also providing services that benefit our local community. Students who work or volunteer in CHBS clinical settings receive clinical training aligned with their academic program and are closely supervised by faculty and staff to ensure quality client service.

All CHBS clinics rely on standard practices including HIPAA compliance training, medical record maintenance, security systems, and other policies and procedures that ensure compliance with applicable regulations and cost containing measures.

Most CHBS clinics offer services to members of the local community. Examples of some of the available services including autism assessment, counseling services, learning disability intervention, hearing and speech-language services, and more. See below for brief overviews of each CHBS clinic.

Applied Behavior Analysis – Parent-Child Interaction (ABA – PCIT) Clinic

Applied Behavior Analysis – Parent-Child Interaction (ABA – PCIT) Clinic provides assessment and treatment intervention services as well as parent consultation, training and support for children with behavioral and neurodevelopmental disabilities such as autism, intellectual disability, acquired traumatic brain injury, attention deficit hyperactivity and oppositional/defiant behavior. ABA is a therapy based on the science of learning and behavior and applies the understanding of how behavior functions in natural situations. PCIT is an evidence-based treatment that focuses on establishing the parent-child relationship and providing consequences for challenging behavior. Both ABA and PCIT provide the parent with tools to approach their child’s challenging behaviors with calm and consistent positive management and discipline strategies appropriate for each child.

Audiology Clinic

The JMU Audiology Clinic is a part of the university’s teaching, research, and community services programs. Through our nationally ranked Au.D. Program, audiology graduate clinicians provide current, evidence based clinical services to individuals of all ages with hearing losses of all types. Under the close supervision of highly trained licensed audiologists, a diagnostic evaluation and treatment plan are devised for each person seen at the clinic. In addition to providing opportunities for quality clinical practicum experiences, the JMU Audiology Clinic also supports research into communication disorders and serves as a resource to the profession and local community. Services are offered to JMU and the broader community.

Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS)

CAPS is a teaching, service, and research clinic that is dedicated to promoting health and wellbeing by providing mental health services. CAPS offers affordable outpatient mental health services while providing graduate students in psychology experience in counseling and psychological assessment. Graduate clinicians are supervised by our faculty who are licensed as professional counselors and/or clinical psychologists. CAPS provides individual (child, adolescent, and adult), couple, and family counseling as well as psychological assessment, testing, and consultation. CAPS services are available to JMU students and the broader community, with locations in Harrisonburg, Luray, and Stanley.

Healthcare for the Homeless, Suitcase Clinic

At the Suitcase Clinic, we recognize the need for health services as well as the barriers to care that exist for individuals who are experiencing homelessness in Harrisonburg. The mobile services provided by the Suitcase Clinic allow patients to have their medical needs addressed in private spaces within various local homeless shelters. In collaboration with volunteer healthcare professionals, student clinicians, and JMU faculty, the Suitcase Clinic provides a variety of services including acute and chronic disease management, mental health care,  prevention services, foot care and medical care coordination.

Interprofessional Autism Clinic (IPAC)

IPAC provides in-depth assessment and multi-disciplinary intervention for children ages 2-10 years old with Autism or suspected Autism.

Interprofessional Services for Learning Assessment (ISLA)

ISLA offers assessment services to help you meet your educational goals. Diagnostic evaluations are provided for adults enrolled in a college or university. We work closely with you to build on strengths, identify areas of need, and design positive ways to promote your academic success. All testing is completed by graduate student clinicians in the doctoral Clinical and School Psychology Program. Doctoral student clinicians are supervised by faculty who are licensed clinical psychologists.

Occupational Therapy Clinical Education Services (OTCES)

OTCES is an outpatient therapy clinic dedicated to supporting the development of children and youth through evidence-based practices. The services we provide include:

  • Evaluations: Comprehensive assessments to understand the specific needs of each child.
  • One-on-One Interventions: Tailored therapeutic sessions to address individual needs.
  • Group Interventions: Programs designed to foster social skills and peer interactions.
  • Consultation: Expert advice and guidance for caregivers and other professionals 

Additionally, OTCES hosts a one-week summer camp to further support the developmental needs of the children we serve.

The clinic operates with the support of James Madison University’s graduate occupational therapy program, with both students and faculty members collaborating on clinic events and services.

In addition to providing therapy services for children, OTCES is committed to supporting and educating both caregivers and community members.

Shenandoah Valley Child Development Clinic (CDC)

The Shenandoah Valley Child Development Clinic (CDC) is committed to providing comprehensive interdisciplinary assessments for children and adolescents who are suspected of having developmental delays and/or disabilities. Our staff offers medical, psychological, educational, and social evaluations to assist in determining a child’s needs. Recommendations are generated from the evaluation for parents and professionals to assist with care planning, referrals, follow-up care coordination, and intervention services.

Speech-Language Clinic

The JMU Speech and Language is an outpatient, university-based clinic providing innovative services to children and adults with a wide range of communication disorders. Through our nationally ranked clinical program, graduate clinicians employ current evidence-based practices to guide diagnostic and therapeutic services under the close supervision of highly trained, ASHA certified/state licensed speech-language pathologists. Clients can expect comprehensive care, individualized treatment plans, and a collaborative approach to meet their unique needs with our clinicians.
