Students majoring in Dietetics will earn a B.S. degree. They may choose between these two concentrations:
- Professional Nutrition and Dietetics Concentration
- Pre-Professional Nutrition and Health Concentration
Both concentrations are subject to the same Academic Policies and Student Handbook.
Professional Nutrition and Dietetics Concentration
Courses
A complete listing of all major core and elective courses for the Professional Nutrition and Dietetics Concentration is available in the JMU university undergraduate catalog. Courses are taught predominantly in an in-person format with the exception of three courses that are offered in a hybrid delivery mode that includes in-person and online class times.
The Dietetics DPD program follows the standard James Madison University academic calendar and includes a total of four academic semesters.

Pre-Professional Nutrition and Health Concentration
The Pre-Professional Nutrition and Health Concentration is designed for students interested in careers that intersect with nutrition and wellness, especially those concurrently enrolled in a pre-professional health minor. Students in this concentration must complete 9-10 additional credits of NUTR electives and 27-28 credits of general electives. Through the curriculum students engage in interdisciplinary and experiential learning to develop foundational knowledge and skills about food, nutrition, and dietetics. Students often pursue a professional health program at the graduate level upon graduating from the program.
The Dietetics program has an admissions process through which a declaration of a concentration is made. Once in the program, student with the Pre-Professional Nutrition and Health Concentration complete 23 credit hours through Dietetics core courses and 9-10 credit hours through elective Nutrition courses. Another 27-28 credit hours are met through general electives and intended to be used to meet requirements for a minor.
