Health Policy Collaborative
The Health Policy Collaborative (HPC) is a partnership between faculty from multiple disciplines. Faculty from the School of Nursing, in collaboration with the Department of Health Sciences, Social Work, Communication Sciences & Disorders, and the College of Business, has developed the HPC to be a conduit for educating students, faculty and the community about health policy. The HPC will act as an infrastructure for research for practical policy solutions and provide a platform for students to engage in health policy both inside and outside of the classroom. Health Policy Summit
Nursing students participate in this all-day event held every fall. Students work in small, interprofessional groups to develop solutions to federal or state policies that negatively impact healthcare for our citizens. They create posters with proposals which are displayed and voted on by the students. The top three proposals are then presented to a panel of invited legislators for feedback. Health Policy Institute
JMU's Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program created the Health Policy Institute (HPI), an initiative where students spend a week working directly with policymakers on Capitol Hill. At a time when the U.S. healthcare system is changing faster than ever, it is imperative for graduate nursing students to understand collaborative advocacy for policies that benefit patients, families and communities.
