JMU School of Nursing will offer guaranteed admission to all JMU nursing alumni who are interested in attending a graduate nursing program to earn an MSN, post-Masters Doctor of Nursing Practice, or a post-BSN Doctor of Nursing Practice degree. Alumni must meet minimum admission requirements for the program and complete the application process by the application deadline. Notifications of admission will be expedited for JMU nursing alumni.
Completed applications for all NP and Nurse Midwifery programs are due on December 1. Select applicant interviews will be held in January. PMHNP & NMW interviews will be scheduled in conjunction with Shenandoah University.
Program Overview
The JMU Master of Science in Nursing Program prepares graduate nurses to meet the challenge of rapidly changing and increasingly complex health care environments. The MSN degree program has the following concentrations:
- Clinical Nurse Leader
- Nurse Administrator
- Family Nurse Practitioner
- Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner
- Nurse Midwifery (in conjunction with Shenandoah University)
- Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (in conjunction with Shenandoah University)

The graduate program is designed to meet the challenges of adult students who wish to continue clinical practice while advancing their education.
- Some concentrations meet one day per week ** and other concentrations are entirely on-line (with the exception of intensive dates).
- Web-enhanced curriculum
- Flexible placement for practicum courses
- Full-time or Part-time study is available
**Note: Clinical practicum or residency occurs on other days.
The MSN Certification Preparation
Graduates of Nurse Practitioner concentrations are qualified to take the certification exam through the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners or the American Nurses Credentialing Center. Graduates of the Clinical Nurse Leader concentration are eligible for certification through the Commission on Nursing Certification. Nurse Midwifery graduates and Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner graduates are certified through our collaborative agreement with Shenandoah University. Those graduates are eligible to sit for their respective certification examinations.
