Dr. Francis (JMU '82) and Mary Carter Farrell (JMU '84) established the endowed Farrell Scholarship in 2004 in honor of their parents, Frank and Eva Farrell. Mrs. Eva Farrell, a registered nurse, was widowed at age 42 with seven children. Following graduation as a nurse, she did not practice during 20 years as a homemaker. In 1977 she returned to nursing and practiced for 20 years, becoming a supervisor prior to her retirement from Roanoke Memorial Hospital. Dr. Farrell was impressed that the skills, values, and knowledge base his mother received as a young nursing student allowed her to begin a nursing career at 47 years of age. The gift creating this scholarship is made to commemorate the lifetime of service to others in need, providing scholarship support for undergraduate nursing students.

The Gloria Jane Hollowell Henley Memorial Scholarship was established in February, 1983 to award a scholarship to a student enrolled in the School of Nursing. Gloria was born July 27, 1936 in Norfolk, Virginia and while in high school, she was diagnosed with Type I (juvenile) diabetes but was determined that it would not have a negative impact on her life. As a juvenile diabetic, Gloria suffered from a number of complications including amputations ultimately dying of heart failure on July 11, 1982, just short of her 46th birthday. Recalling his mother's love for the nurses who had cared for her over the years, the family established a scholarship for a nursing student.

Established in March 2015 by the nursing students in memory of Professor Diane Babral who passed unexpectedly after a short battle with ovarian cancer. Diane personified what it meant to be a caring, thoughtful, encouraging faculty member and was passionate about nursing, specifically psychiatric nursing. She was a strong advocate for the vulnerable mentally ill members of our society. The scholarship will be for an undergraduate junior or senior nursing student interested in pursuing psychiatric nursing.

Graduates from our programs are filling voids in primary care, leadership roles to improve quality and safety of care, healthcare administration, and nursing faculty. JMU Faculty emeriti have recognized the need for financial support for prospective students and are initiating launching the Nursing Graduate Emeriti Endowed Scholarship. But we can’t do this alone. We are asking you, our esteemed alumni to help us “Give Back.” Our goal is $25,000. No amount is too small. Be the Change and help “Pay it Forward.”
