The social work faculty select each year a student to receive the Mary Theresa Pruchnic Award for the Outstanding Senior in Social Work. Selection is based on scholarship, performance/competence and professional identification.

The social work faculty select each year a student to receive the Soul of Social Work Award. Selection is based on the criteria including demonstration of a passion for social work, compassion for those whom we serve, commitment to community service, commitment to empowering and enabling oneself and others, ability to get out of one’s comfort zone, and strong communication skills.

The Advocacy in Action Award is awarded by faculty to a graduating JMU-BSW student who meets the following criteria: demonstrated leadership, commitment to social causes, action toward social change, and behavior consistent with social work values and ethics

Scholarships

The Cecil D. Bradfield Scholarship in Social Work is awarded to a full-time JMU officially declared social work who is a rising sophomore, junior or senior who had been admitted to the Social Work Program; has a cumulative GPA of at least a 3.0; has demonstrated need as determined by filing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA); and demonstrated commitment to community service and advocacy for the underprivileged.  The award goes to sociology major in even years and a social work major in odd years.

The recipient must be a declared junior or senior in social work with a 3.0 or higher cumulative GPA (on a 4.0 scale) at James Madison University and have demonstrated financial need as determined by the Office of Financial Aid.

The Cecil D. Bradfield Lifelong Learning Scholarship in Gerontology is awarded to two students who are a senior social work major or gerontology minor studying, working or planning on working with older adults.  The recipients may be eligible for either December or May graduation; and must have 2.75 and above cumulative GPA with a 3.0+in required major or minor courses. Professional identification may be demonstrated by membership in professional/student organizations and/or special papers, presentations, projects as well as by community service, campus wide activities and/or work experience.
