Students may find they need various supports to succeed in their academic pursuits. Please remember that your faculty academic advisor is a primary resource and a person who could guide you to resources you may need. Many services may be offered remotely. From a holistic perspective, sometimes non-academic supports are vital to academic support. Please reach out as needed.
Academic Supports
IT Help Desk – serves as the central point of contact for computing support. You may access them through email, phone, or in person on the 4th floor of the Student Success Center. Can help with Canvas concerns or hardware concerns.
The Learning Center – offers free tutoring and learning in the areas of communication, science and math, writing, multilingual student services, and peer-assisted study groups.
JMU Libraries – Libraries are not just a storage space for books! It provides an online search capacity open to all students and is the hub for campus tech support. The Makery is a unique space for creating using technology.
- The social work librarian is a good resource for helping with research topics, as is the Social Work Research Guide.
- The libraries offer the APA Resource Guide, though students are encouraged to purchase the APA manual.

- 24-hour open-access study space is located in Rose Library. Other study rooms in the library may be requested online. Study rooms are also available in the Student Success Center via registration.
Non-Academic Supports
Center for Multicultural Services (CMSS) – strives to support an inclusive campus through dialogue, leadership experiences, and cultural celebrations beyond the classroom that honor and value diverse and intersectional identities. Offers cultural & affinity spaces where students can connect and support the inter-cultural Greek life on campus.
Counseling Center – provides individual & group counseling, case management, self-help resources, linkage to area counseling, and some urgent care assistance.
Timely Care – is an online 24/7 hour, 365 days a year free counseling service available to JMU students providing an on-demand access to mental health professionals, scheduled counseling, health coaching, peer assistance, psychiatry, and self-care supports.
Dean of Students – supports students learning and interpersonal growth and responds to informational and personal concerns of students, parents, faculty, or staff. Helpful with family crises or challenging situations, normalizing setbacks with the mentor-based Rebound program, or notifying faculty of extended absences from class due to extenuating circumstances.
JMU Police – provides basic and emergency support for the campus community and its members as needed. Provide presence and safety for the JMU community and responds to urgent matters.
Madison Cares – a centralized program for students or departments to consult about student concerns. Available for yourself or if you have another student you are concerned about.
Office of Disability Services – provides support for any student who is seeking or has an ADA accommodation. Students must apply and provide documentation, followed by a meeting with their staff. The Accommodate system shares appropriate information about student accommodations with course instructors.
SOGIE – Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity & Expression is committed to fostering equity for all students, inclusive of all sexual orientations, gender identities, and expressions through education, support, advocacy, and an affinity space.
The Student Support Hub – provides information about campus and community resources and may include food, housing, and financial assistance. Other assistance could include child care, the Career Closet, tech and textbook assistance, graduation caps & gowns, and support with internships.
University Career Center – provides help with resumes, job searches, interviews, internship searches, professional headshots, and grad school or employment fairs.
University Health Center – may include COVID-19 information, basic medical care support (some for a fee), international travel consultation, pharmacy, lab services, and self-care support.
