What are TRIO Programs?

Federal TRIO programs are grant-funded initiatives designed to serve and assist low-income, first-generation college students, and individuals with disabilities in their academic progression from middle school through college. Initially consisting of three programs, TRIO has expanded to eight programs and exists through many colleges and even non-profit organizations all across the United States and Pacific islands.

At JMU, TRIO programs include two pre-collegiate initiatives: Upward Bound and Educational Talent Search (also known as Talent Search). Together, these programs serve a combined total of 560 students each year at three area middle schools (Skyline, Thomas Harrison, and Montevideo) and three area high schools (Harrisonburg, Rocktown and Spotswood). All services are completely FREE for participants.
