This program is for students completing the Pre-Professional Secondary Education minor AND a B.S. or B.A. in one of the following subjects: biology, chemistry, earth science, English, history, mathematics, physics, or political science.

 

Application Deadline

Completed applications should be received by March 1 for priority consideration for scholarships or Graduate Assistantships. The application deadline is April 1.

Transcripts

Unofficial transcripts from all post-secondary institutions should be uploaded with your electronic application and may be used for departmental admission review purposes.

If offered admission, you will be directed and required to submit to the JMU Graduate School an official transcript from any institution other than JMU from which a degree has been awarded to finalize your admission. Transcripts are considered official if they are sent to JMU directly from the issuing institution.

If you took courses required for licensure at another institution, you must submit official transcripts verifying the course in order to be eligible for your license.

Application and Unconditional Admission Requirements

  • Undergraduate degree with completion of all content area coursework (must at least earn credit for the course) and Pre-Professional Secondary Education minor coursework (must earn a "B-" or higher)
  • Minimum cumulative undergraduate GPA of 2.7 or above.
  • Assessments - upload scores reports or evidence that you've scheduled the tests
    • Virginia passing score on the appropriate Praxis Subject Assessment for the desired teaching endorsement area
  • Completion of all admission requirements to the Teacher Education Program 

No letter of recommendation is required. Two professional references will be solicited by the Educational Support Center later in the Teacher Education application process. References must know the candidate for at least 6 months in a professional capacity.

Candidates may be conditionally admitted to the program pending completion of admission requirements but must complete all admission requirements prior to beginning more than 12 credit hours of M.A.T. graduate coursework.

Candidates may be provisionally admitted to the program pending completion of required content coursework for the desired endorsement area but must complete all provisional admission requirements prior to beginning more than 9 credit hours of M.A.T. graduate coursework.

Applicants must not have any felony or misdemeanor convications involving children, drugs, or any founded complaint of child abuse or neglect.
