What is The Yard?
The Yard houses plots (monuments) which represent Black, Latinx and Asian-Interest Fraternities and Sororities within the Inter-Cultural Greek Council. The Inter-Cultural Greek Council (ICGC) is a multicultural fraternity and sorority Council and has a total of 13 organizations from the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC), National Association of Latino Fraternal Organizations, Inc. (NALFO), and National APIDA Panhellenic Association (NAPA). These organizations have been on the campus of James Madison University since 1971 when the first organization was chartered. Each of these organizations have an emphasis on academic excellence, service to the community, advocacy, and brotherhood/sisterhood.
Traditionally, the culture of a Yard has existed and been acknowledged on the campuses of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) for NPHC organizations. In recent years Predominately White Institutions (PWIs) have also adopted this culture to create representation for culturally-based fraternities and sororities that exists on campus. This space is geared towards increasing awareness of this community and the communities they serve and represent.
The Yard was offically dedicated on March 30, 2022.

Founding Information:Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc was founded December 4th, 1906 on the campus of Cornell University in Ithaca, New York.
