Yes. On the application, list one reference (name, email, phone number).

References can be anyone who will be able to provide information regarding your work ethic, personal character, and level of potential success as a Summer Staff member.

Suggestions for references: Current or former employers/supervisors, professors, advisors, coaches, high school teachers, and someone who works for Residence Life.

Advice: Always check with individuals BEFORE listing them as a reference. Explain that you are applying for a Summer Staff position within Residence Life and ask if they are comfortable providing a STRONG, POSITIVE reference for you. Provide them with the deadline for the reference as well.

Yes, however, previous ResLife experience is highly preferred.

Individuals with Residence Life experience will be given precedence over individuals without.

  • Read through the position description available on eRezLife.

  • Think about the different responsibilities and tasks and imagine yourself in the Summer HD or RA role.

    • What will that look like, how will YOU do the job?

  • Speaking with your references is also a good place to start.

    • Your references can give you information and examples about yourself and your skills that you can use during your interview.

Those who apply to both the Summer HD and Summer RA positions will interview for both positions during the same interview.

All disciplinary records will be reviewed as part of the selection process.

It is still possible to be on Summer Staff with a strike.

The most important thing is to be upfront with Alexis Plater and/or your interviewer. Think about your specific situation and how it may positively or negatively impact your ability to be an effective Summer Staff member.

2025 Summer Building: Hoffman Hall

Medical information should be on file with the university as soon as possible to prevent complications later.

Make sure to complete the Housing Accommodation Process as soon as possible.

Yes! All HD and RA rooms have A/C regardless of the rest of the building's status.

RA rooms are designated to be spread throughout the building, so two RAs would not be assigned in one suite. It is possible to be on the same floor as your friends.

Training

Previous RA or HD experience is highly preferred when joining the Summer Staff.

This means that training is minimal and as needed based on each individual’s previous experience. If training occurs, it will occur following Commencement in May.

Summer training may cover a variety of topics such as working with student-athletes, team building, supportive community development, programming, confrontation/behavior management, crisis management, and many others.

Office Hours and Duty/On-Call

All Summer RAs are required to work 5 hours per week during the first 4 weeks of the summer semester in the Office of Residence Life in Huffman Hall under the guidance of the Student Learning Initiatives (SLI) Coordinator.

They also work 7 hours per week during the remaining part of the summer semester in the Office of Residence Life in Huffman Hall under the guidance of the SLI Coordinator.

The Summer HD does not have specified office hours.

RAs work with the SLI Coordinator to prepare and package all materials for staff training in the fall as well as for fall move-in. This includes, sorting, counting, packing, measuring and cutting, labeling and delivering items, and many other activities.

No, the Summer HD is not on-call during the summer, nor do they sit duty.

Summer RAs sit duty and the Full-Time staff members within Residence Life are on-call during the summer.

Duty will depend on the number of RAs in your rotation and how many RAs sit duty each night.

Yes, duty night exchanges are worked out with the approval of your Hall Director.

RAs do not have office hours or specific times to be available, but it is recommended that RAs spend as much evening and weekend time in the hall as possible in order to interact with residents during the times they are more likely to be in the residence hall.
