Michelle Lisa Herman is an interdisciplinary artist based in Washington, DC, whose practice is centered at the intersection of art and technology and draws on references such as tech culture, theoretical and philosophical research, feminist and disability politics, comedy, and conceptualism. Herman previously served for ten years as the Head of Digital Experience at the Smithsonian Archives of American Art, where she directed the production, development, user experience, architecture, and strategy of the public-facing Archives of American Art website. Before the Smithsonian, Herman was the Digital Media Manager at The Phillips Collection and the Interactive Media Designer for ARTSEDGE at the Kennedy Center.
Herman has shown her artwork internationally in both group and solo exhibitions at locations such as the Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona (Barcelona, Spain), Cinéma du Foyer Saint-François (Bourges, France), the Corcoran (Washington, DC), Goggleworks (Reading, PA), The Museum of Contemporary Art Arlington (Arlington, VA), Visarts (Rockville, MD), and the Washington Project for the Arts (Washington, DC).
Herman’s work has been written about and featured in Hyperallergic, New American Paintings, The Washington Post, NPR, and East City Arts. Herman is an alumna of the Maryland Institute College of Art (MFA, 2020) and the Sparkplug artist collective sponsored by the DC Arts Center.
