Getting Credit for Experience

Internships and practical experiences are important parts of a SMAD student’s education. SMAD students can receive 1, 2, 3 or 4 credits for qualified, approved internship experiences. Each credit is equivalent to 60 hours of work at the internship.

SMAD's Facebook page is an excellent source for internship opportunities.

How to Receive Internship Credit

You must first meet three qualifications:

  • Be fully admitted into SMAD;
  • Have a minimum 2.75 GPA through the semester before the internship;
  • Have completed SMAD 201 and 202 by the time the internship begins.

If you meet these qualifications, you should complete the online application you can access through the button below. The SMAD internship coordinator will review your application and, if approved, you will receive permission to enroll in SMAD 495 for the semester during which you will complete the internship.

During the Internship

To receive credit for the internship, you will be responsible for turning in two items:

  • During your internship, you will keep a daily log that shows the number of hours worked and a brief description of what you did and what you learned from the day’s work. That log will be turned in at the end of the internship.
  • After the internship, your supervisor will complete an online evaluation form.
How Your Internship will be Evaluated

Your grade will be based on several factors:

  • Required hours must be completed, or you will receive an incomplete. Meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee an “A,” nor does exceeding the minimum number of hours.
  • The Supervisor’s Evaluation Form is a major component of your grade. Forty percent of the form grades attitude and professionalism; 60 percent grades skills and performance.
  • The completeness and professionalism of your log will determine whether, in the case of a borderline grade, you receive the higher or lower grade.
