On-Campus: Federal Work Study (FWS)
Overview of Program:
Offered to students who demonstrate financial need as determined by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The selection of students for all FWS positions is a competitive process and job placement is not guaranteed.
Financial Aid Requirements:
Students are awarded FWS as part of their Financial Aid package. Students must fill out the FAFSA annually and have financial need as determined by the Department of Education.
Eligibility:
Students must be degree-seeking students, enrolled on at least a half-time basis (6 credits for undergraduate and 5 credits for graduate).
Wage/Number of Hours:
The average rate of pay is $13.00 per hour, but varies according to the position. The federal minimum wage is $7.25 per hour however, the Commonwealth of Virginia's minimum wage is $12.00/hr. JMU is required to pay the higher of the two. Students are paid bimonthly in the form of a paycheck- their earnings are not applied against the University bill.
Students work 12 hours a week on average and cannot exceed 20 hours.

On-Campus: Institutional Employment (IE)
Overview of Program:
Part-time, on-campus employment opportunities to students regardless of financial need. Students do not need to fill out the FAFSA to apply for IE positions.
Financial Aid Requirements:
Financial Aid eligibility does not apply. No FAFSA is required to work an IE position.
Eligibility:
Students must be degree-seeking students, enrolled on at least a half-time basis (6 credits for undergraduate and 5 credits for graduate).

Off-Campus Part-TIme

Program assists students to find part-time jobs off campus regardless of their financial need. Students do not need to fill out the FAFSA to apply for off-campus positions.
Financial Aid Requirements:
Financial Aid eligibility does not apply. No FAFSA is required to work an off-campus position.
Eligibility:
Must be a JMU student and meet the requirements set by the off-campus employer.
Wage/Number of Hours:
On average, students work 11-15* hours and make approximately $15-$20*/hour depending on the job. *Determined from 2023-2024 data
Application Process:
Off-campus positions are posted on the Student Employment website. Students will need to apply directly with the employer based on the instructions provided on the job announcement.
