Description:

We, as part of James Madison University, have a responsibility in maintaining a safe work environment.  Our campus buildings encompass offices, classrooms, dorms, dining areas and more. With such a vast number of people and buildings, we need to keep safety in the forefront of our minds. In this workshop series, we intend to put emergency preparedness and safety on automatic to keep all of our JMU community safe. As a "Safety Champion" you will gain a new perspective on safety and ways to respond appropriately to any emergency situation you may encounter at work and/or at home. This six-month long series will be capped at 15 participants. Each participant who attends all six 3-hour workshops, will receive a certificate of completion.

Session 3: Ergonomics, Slips/Trips/Falls, and State Vehicles

I work in an office, why do I need to worry about ergonomics or slips/trips/falls for that matter? Learn what ergonomics means in an office setting and how to make changes to create a safer environment. Many ergonomic factors cross various jobs; learn how it all relates. Slips, trips, and falls are the number one area of injury at JMU. Learn how to keep yourself safe. Lastly, does your department need to use state vehicles?  Find out what training is required before your vehicle request.

Session 4: Chemicals, Weather Related Disasters and CPR/AED

When we think of chemicals, we tend to think of laboratory facilities. What chemicals do we have in our buildings that we need to consider for safety? Learn how to read labels and find information on chemicals. In the second part of this session, learn about weather related disasters and how to keep yourself and everyone around you safe. The last part of the session will provide an overview of CPR and AED use.

Session 5: Active Shooter, Terrorism

Session 6: Stormwater Safety, Cyber Security, Q&A, Award Certifications

What can and cannot go into our storm drains?  Find out during the part one of this session in stormwater safety. In part two you will learn about Cyber Security and how it not only affects us here at JMU but at home as well. Lastly, any questions will be answered that you may still have from the overall series.
