"GPA" stands for grade point average. A GPA is a calculation of quality points earned and credit hours attempted.

Quality Points Earned
Each letter grade equals a certain number of quality points, such as A=4 points, B+=3.3 points, B=3 points, etc. Multiply the number of quality points for the letter grade by the number of credit hours for the course; for example, if you earned a B in a three credit hour course, you would earn 9 quality points (3.00 quality points x 3 credit hours) for that course.
The list of letter grades and quality points are:

Credit Hours Attempted
If you have a W (withdrawal), WP (withdrawal while passing), or WF (withdrawal while failing) for a course, do not include these grades in your GPA calculations. Students do not earn quality points or credit hours when you withdraw from a course.
If you have repeated a class with “repeat forgive” or taken a course and earned a CR, NC, I, NP, there is a special way you need to calculate your GPA. If you have any of these grades on your transcript, consult with an academic advisor to learn how this impacts your GPA.
Calculating Your GPA
To calculate your GPA, divide the total number of quality points earned by the number of credit hours attempted.
Total Quality Points = Grade Point Average
Credit Hours Attempted

ISC GPA - calculate by using only quality points and grades earned for English for Academic Purposes (EAP) courses taken in the ISC. (Contact the ISC Office for more information.)

JMU GPA - calculate by using only quality points and grades earned for JMU undergraduate courses recorded on your continuing education transcript. (Look at the second page of your Unofficial Transcript)

Cumulative GPA - calculated using the total quality points for all of the grades you have earned for ISC EAP and JMU UG courses divided by the total number of credit hours attempted.
