NOTE:The information on this page is specific to students transitioning from the ISC Study Group Program to JMU's undergraduate degree program. Undergraduate students enrolled directly at JMU should visit the Academic Advising website.
Repeating Courses Taken in the ISC in the ISC
ISC students studying on a continuing education (CE) record who repeat courses while in the ISC will transfer credit and grades to their undergraduate (UG) academic record at JMU for the class with the most favorable grade.
All grades for multiple attempts of courses will be averaged into the cumulative GPA while in the ISC. This is the GPA that is considered for progression purposes to the JMU undergraduate program. Classes with grades of 'W', 'WP', or 'WF', will not transfer to JMU.
Repeating Courses Taken in the ISC at JMU
ISC students who have transferred credit for a class from the ISC to JMU, and wish to repeat that class at JMU, can do so under special conditions.
While students are studying in the ISC, they earn credit for the JMU courses on a continuing education (CE) transcript. After the student successfully completes the ISC and progresses to full enrollment in the undergraduate (UG) program, the Registrar’s Office will transfer the credit and grades earned for JMU courses from the CE transcript to the UG transcript. As the student studies in the undergraduate program, they will continue to earn credit on the UG transcript.
Students should read and understand this policy and talk to an advisor before deciding to repeat a course for which they first earned credit in the ISC.
Procedure for Courses first taken in the ISC and repeated at JMU
-
ISC students who repeat classes while in the ISC will transfer the credit and best grade they earned for that class to JMU. Classes with grades of 'W', 'WP', or 'WF', will not transfer to JMU.
-
ISC students who have transferred credit for a class from the ISC to JMU, and wish to repeat that class at JMU, can do it for a grade under these conditions:
- The credit transferred from the ISC will remain on the JMU UG transcript until the end of the term in which the class is being repeated.
- If the student earns a grade of 'D-' or higher for the repeat attempt, the attempt from the ISC will be removed permanently from their JMU undergraduate transcript after the repeat grade is posted. If the student gets a 'D-' or higher, regardless of if the new grade is better or worse, the new grade will be the one calculated into their GPA at JMU. The old grade will always stay on their CE transcript of courses taken in the ISC.
- If the student enrolls in a repeated class and earns a grade of 'F', 'W', 'WP', or 'WF', the graded transfer credit will remain on their JMU UG transcript and on their CE transcript. Both the new (F, W, WP, WF) and old grades will remain on the JMU UG transcript and will be calculated into the student’s cumulative GPA at JMU.
- The credit transferred from the ISC will remain on the JMU UG transcript until the end of the term in which the class is being repeated.
NOTE: Students will not use a repeat credit or repeat/forgiveness option on the first attempt to repeat a class on a UG transcript that they first took on a CE transcript. Repeat credit or repeat/forgiveness options will only be used on classes taken on an undergraduate record at JMU and repeated on an undergraduate record at JMU.
