Dr. Jonathan Miles is a Professor of Integrated Science and Technology and the Executive Director of the Center for the Advancement of Sustainable Energy at James Madison University.
His background is in physics and mechanical engineering and he teaches a range of courses at all levels involving the applied sciences along with engineering and energy. Dr. Miles has been involved with wind energy since 1998.

Dr. Jonathan J. Miles (Professor, Integrated Science and Technology) received $24,855 from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory to lead an interdisciplinary team of students to design and construct a lightweight, transportable wind turbine that can be used to power small electronic devices.

Keith Holland (Assistant Professor, Engineering) and Dr. James W. Wilson (Assistant Professor, Integrated Science and Technology) received $24,000 from the U.S. Department of Energy for the Wind for Schools in Virginia program, hosted by James Madison University, Phase III Mod. 5 to formalize the Wind Applications Center at JMU and to employ a novel Wind for Schools facilitation scheme for K-12 schools in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Dr. Jonathan J. Miles (Professor, Integrated Science and Technology) received two awards from the Department of Mines, Minerals and Energy – $22,500 for the Wind for Schools Program to assist schools that are currently engaged in planning for and/or siting wind turbines on their campuses and to conduct school/classroom visits and $17,500 for the state-based anemometer loan program to visit and maintain and/or decommission the systems now deployed and to deploy one of the towers currently in the Center for Wind Energy’s inventory.

Dr. Jonathan J. Miles (Professor, Integrated Science and Technology) received $73,311from the Department of Mines, Minerals and Energy for general and core services for the Center for Wind Energy. The grant will help to conduct a continual, intensive and comprehensive self-assessment and business planning exercise in order to identify the services that are most appropriate and useful to the university and to the commonwealth.
