The 3+2 Model

The purpose of the 3+2 accelerated pathway is to prepare students to become certified athletic trainers with the clinical knowledge, skills, and professional attitudes that will enable them to deliver health care effectively in various clinical settings. The 3+2 pathway will provide an accelerated route to the Master of Science in Athletic Training (MSAT) degree. Students will complete both the undergraduate and graduate degree programs in 5 years, compared to the traditional 6 years.

Our Accelerated Pathway is designed for high-achieving JMU undergraduate students who want to earn both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in just five years. Here’s how it works:

1. Three Years of Undergraduate Excellence:

Start by declaring a Kinesiology or Health Sciences major. Over the next three years, you’ll complete the undergraduate coursework associated with your major obtaining 98 undergraduate credits of coursework. Upon successful application to the Master of Science in Athletic Training Program in the spring of your second year, you will prepare to transition into the master’s program after completing your third-year major requirements.

2. Seamless Transition to the Master of Science in Athletic Training (MSAT):

After your third year of undergraduate studies, you’ll begin summer classes in the competitive and esteemed JMU MSAT Program. The graduate-level courses you complete in the summer and fall of your fourth year will count toward the 120 credits needed to complete your bachelor’s degree early while completing degree requirements for your master’s degree.

3. Two Years of Graduate Athletic Training Education:

Spend your fourth and fifth years at JMU focusing your enthusiasm into a rewarding career with athletic training! In JMU’s MSAT Program, you’ll be at the forefront of patient care, helping patients of all levels prevent injuries, optimize performance, and recover swiftly.
