Listed below are the three nationally recognized training programs/certifications that are built-in to the PA Program curriculum.
Basic Life Support (BLS)
PA students will become certified in Basic Life Support via the American Heart Association during the 4th semester of the Program as part of the course, PA 626 – Clinical Medicine III. There is no additional fee for this certification.
Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS)
PA students will become certified in Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support via the American Heart Association during the 4th semester of the Program as part of the course, PA 626 – Clinical Medicine III. There is no additional fee for this certification.
MAT Waiver Training
PAs can apply for an “X-waiver” from the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) in order to be eligible to prescribe buprenorphine for Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT). MAT is a key component of treatment for opioid use disorder. In order to obtain the X-waiver, one must first complete 24-hours of approved training. The JMU PA Program has this training built in to the course PA 679 – Behavioral Medicine Clinical Rotation. This is a key initiative recommended by the Physician Assistant Education Association. There is no additional fee for this training.
