JMU: The Engaged University
James Madison University has a vision "to be the national model for the engaged university: engaged with ideas and the world." JMU defines the three elements of engagement as: engaged learning, civic engagement, and community engagement. Below are some examples of how the JMU Physician Assistant Program is meeting this vision:
Engaged Learning
- The Student-Engaged Medical Clinic (PA520, PA621, & PA626)
- Medical history and physical diagnosis skills through patient-based interactive software (PA511)
- Medical decision making and clinical problem solving skills through digital patient simulations and presentations (PA652)
- A capstone project (PA551, PA653 & PA654)
- Hands-on skills workshops (PA621 & PA631)
Civic Engagement
The PA Program facilitates civic engagement through participation in "White Coats on Call" each year. Visit the webpage for more details and photos.
Community Engagement
The Healthcare for the Homeless, Suitcase Clinic is a way for local volunteers to address health care concerns of the homeless population in the Harrisonburg community. Rather than a permanent clinic setting, the Suitcase Clinic functions by maintaining medical supplies in large suitcases on wheels that personnel travel with to various homeless shelters in the community. Student Organization
The physician assistant student society (PASS) is very active in the Harrisonburg-Rockingham community; including participation in blood drives, free blood pressure screenings, children's health fairs, and more. Visit their webpage for examples and photos.
International Rotation Opportunities
As options for the elective clinical rotations (PA 670 & 680), PA students may choose an international experience in Trujillo, Peru and/or in Shirati, Tanzania.
