Science in the 21st century is fast-paced and global, so we are committed to providing the preparation you need to succeed in a STEM workforce that is increasingly diverse and international in scope. CSM students get the best STEM education when they experience learning in diverse teams of dedicated peers. In the CSM community, every student has a part to play and place to belong.

To this end, we strive to be actively anti-racist within our college. The following is excerpted from our Inclusive Excellence Action Plan, and the complete text of our plan can also be viewed by clicking below.

We recognize that white is the dominant and privileged presence here at JMU and in CSM. We recognize that systemic racism has and continues to be a characteristic of higher education. We, as community members of CSM and JMU, have a lot to learn about being anti-racist and we are willing and wanting to work for equity in CSM, at JMU, and in society.

Our efforts will start with CSM leadership and faculty. We will have these conversations and do this work. We must learn what we are doing wrong and unlearn it. We will recognize our mistakes and ask for help. We will need to lose the fear of saying the wrong thing in order to grow and learn.

We decided to intentionally focus on support of our black community members. While this is our immediate focus, it should be and will be, part of a continued and sustained effort to build equity for all marginalized and underrepresented groups.
