Fall 2024 Orientation Schedule (Pending)

 

Start completing your checklist- Join us in the CGE lounge area to obtain answers and suggestions to your situation as well as connect with other new graduate international students. We'll get stated on the ISSS Checklist Meeting locationCGE Lounge  2nd floor of Holland Yates Hall.

Required session for  F-1 students- By virtue of your immigration status, you need to know and understand immigration implications on your academic status, on your ability to work, and travel. We will start your process for obtaining a social security number and we will introduce you to your health insurance plan. Make sure to: bring your passport and I-20. Meeting locationCGE Classroom 2nd floor of Holland Yates Hall.

Shopping Trip- Hopefully, by now, you are moved into your new living unit, but you may need a few items for yourself and/or your room. Meeting locationCGE Classroom 2nd floor of Holland Yates Hall

Welcome Picnic- Let's take this time to come together and informally meet one another to socialize and enjoy a "US-style picnic." Bring your sneakers if you want to play some outdoor/indoor games (such as soccer). Meeting location: Bus stop or directly in the back of UREC (University Recreation Center).

ISSS Checklist

Steps to complete:

Step #1 Meet with Thomas in person to (1) be in the JMU system and (2) get started on this ISSS Checklist … and get paid.

Step #2 Connect to JMU-Official Wireless. Log-in using your e-ID & MyMadison password

Step #3 Phone plan- Download the Mint Mobile app & follow the instructions + video demoAndroid | Apple

Step #4 Open a bank account

Step #5 Obtain your JACard

Step #6 Attend the international sessions for F-1 students

Step #7 Login to MyMadison and complete your contact information section (mailing address & US phone #)

Step #8 Complete your SEVIS Registration

Step #9 Download your health insurance card 

Step #10 Go to your academic dept. and stop by to see your GA supervisor. (1) Introduce yourself and find out what they need from you. (2) Get your GA supervisor to complete and sign the top section of your SSN Letter.

Step #11 Schedule an appointment with Thomas to: (1) sign the bottom portion of your SSN letter, complete the SSN Application, (2) complete the I-9, and (3) go over the SSN & Payroll Timeline.

Step #12 14 days after your entry in the US- Go to the social security office (301 N. Mason Street Suite 101 with your: I-20, passport, I-94, SSN application receipt & signed SSN letter

Step #13 Schedule an appointment with Thomas in early February
