The Center for Global Engagement presents International Week 2023.

Join us for an exciting week of events celebrating JMU’s international communities. Let’s come together to embrace the incredible diversity of our campus: explore new cultures, eat new food, and learn about opportunities to study abroad.  No matter what you choose to participate in, I-Week is your passport to good company, good food, and good vibes.

I-Week Photo Contest

Submissions: 8/21 - 9/4       Voting: 9/4 - 9/15

Categories: A) Nature B) People C) Architecture D) Miscellaneous

Prizes: Each category will have three finalists whose photos will be printed and displayed during I-Week. Winning photos will be selected by a panel of judges and showcased at the CGE reception. 

  • Grand Prize: $99 Flex, framed photo print, and invite to CGE reception.
  • Category Winners: $50 Flex, framed photo print, and invite to CGE reception.
  • Finalists: $25 Flex, and a framed photo print.

International Bazaar
  • Date: Monday, September 18
  • Time: 11am - 2pm
  • Location: Warner Commons

The International Bazaar is a free event featuring globally-inspired vendors, food, music, displays, and entertainment in the heart of campus. Vendors and student groups feature merchandise from around the world so don’t forget to bring cash – this will be a great place to pick up gifts for your friends and family, or splurge on something for yourself

Art & Design from Study Abroad in The Netherlands (2018-2023)
  • Date: Tuesday, September 19

  • Location: Wilson Hall Main Lobby

This showcase will feature various forms of both physical and digital art and design. It will focus on recent work from study abroad students in the Netherlands.

Vegan Around The World
  • Date: Tuesday, September 19
  • Time: 6:30pm - 7:30pm
  • Location: UREC Kitchen

Explore different flavors around the world and learn the benefits of a vegan diet. Spots are limited. Registration Full.

Study Abroad Fair

  • Time: 11am - 1pm; 2pm - 4pm
  • Location: Festival Grand Ballroom

Drop in and chat with program directors and students who’ve travelled to Japan, Argentina, Italy, Ghana, and more! Get your questions answered and explore the semester, short-term and graduate programs available to you in 2024 and 2025.

The Frasure-Kruzel-Drew Memorial Fellowship Panel
  • Date: Wednesday, September 20
  • Time: 5pm - 7pm
  • Location: Highlands Room, Festival

The Frasure-Kruzel-Drew Memorial Fellowship: Its Origins and Impact 25 Years Later

The panel will discuss the origins of the Fellowship established at the Department of State as a memorial to 3 U.S. diplomats who perished in Bosnia in 1995 while on a peace mission and share the impact of the Fellowship experience on some of the 40 young professionals, many JMU alums, who have served since 1999. The event will be a one-hour panel discussion followed by a reception with the Fellows.

Gandhi Center Open House

The Gandhi Center at JMU is hosting an open house to commemorate the International Day of Peace. Serving breakfast from 10-noon, and lunch from noon until food is gone. There will be a raffle for books and other prizes. Stop by for free food, swag, and JUSTPEACE totes!

Global Crafternoon

Join the Office of Student Leadership & Involvement and CGE on the Union Patio for a globally-inspired Thursday Crafternoon in honor of International Week and create a fun and free GLOBAL craft!

Global Games

  • Time: 11am - 1pm
  • Location: Hillside Field

This year's Global Games will take the form of a skills tournament. Drop in anytime between 11am- 1pm and test your abilities in four of the world’s most popular sports: golf, badminton, soccer and cricket. Score the highest in each event for a chance to win your share of $250 in Flex cash. This friendly competition is open to everyone regardless of experience. If you can putt, bat, kick, or swing, you could be crowned the Global Games Grand Champion!

Global Cuisine

Learn how to make unique dishes from around the world. This class will explore international cuisines and provide tips on how to incorporate recipes into a healthy meal. Whether you're a beginner or a culinary expert, this class will improve your cooking abilities. Spots are limited. Registration Full.

ISSS Hike
  • Saturday, September 23
  • Time: 1pm - 5pm
  • Location: UREC

In celebration of I-Week, UREC Adventure and International Student & Scholar Services are working in collaboration to offer a hiking experience for international students. Registered participants will ride together in a UREC van out to the High Knob trail head for a 2.7 mile out and back hike. Participants must wear closed toed shoes. Contact isss@jmu.edu to reserve your spot.
