About

Each year the U.S. State Department, in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Education, organizes a week of events that celebrate the benefits of international education and exchange worldwide. The goal of this joint initiative is to promote programs that prepare Americans for a global environment and attract future leaders from abroad to study, learn, and exchange experiences.

This year's theme, "The Future Is..." explores the many ways that international education is driving us into the future.

At JMU, we are marking IEW by hosting learning opportunities for faculty, staff, and students to get more involved.

Dr. Dawn Michele Whitehead is the Vice President of the Office of Global Citizenship for Campus, Community, and Careers at the American Association of Colleges and Universities (AAC&U). The field of higher education has been challenged to become more equitable, aware, and responsive to the intersections of global and local realities over the past few years. This has elevated the importance of global learning while also inspiring a rethinking long-standing practices and approaches to addressing global challenges. How should students be prepared for the new realities of work, life, and citizenship in this interconnected world? This may require a disruption in the way things have been done, from the types of curricular and co-curricular experiences to engagement of more faculty, staff, and students in a variety of global learning opportunities.
