The Learning Centers Micro-Gallery is now open!
Yulin Yuan is the first featured artist in the space. Her work explores identity, mythology, family history, and community through a multimedia artistic approach featuring collage, video, and photography. She is a Chinese-born South African international student pursuing her Master of Fine Arts degree at JMU having earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Cape Town.
The displayed selections from Yuan's "EGG of Chaos" art series feature photographed self-portraits staged to represent traditional Chinese mythological stories and characters using found objects and locations in volunteers' homes. The series remixes intimate spaces and emphasizes solace, belonging, and mythmaking within complex, multilayered identities.
The Learning Centers is thrilled to display work that represents the beauty and possibility of exchanging cultural knowledge as we strive to be a source of support for multilingual and international students navigating higher education.
The Learning Centers Micro-Gallery is located in James Madison University's Student Success Center. To view Yulin Yuan's work, walk in through the Learning Centers' west entrance (near Dunkin') during regular hours (Mon-Thurs: 10:00 a.m.–8:00 p.m., Fri: 10:00 a.m.–2:00 p.m., Sun: 3:00 p.m.–8:00 p.m.), meet the friendly people at the desk, and turn left down the hallway.
