Academic Support Instruction, a program within the Office of Residence Life, helps students who live on-campus improve their academic skills in areas such as:

Accounting Tutoring, free
The school of Accounting offers free tutoring for COB 241, 242, & 244.
Accounting Tutoring - paid
Paid tutors are available for COB 241 and 242. Students negotiate payment and schedule.
Anthropology, free
Free tutoring is provided for all students enrolled in Anthropology classes.
Biology PASS support, free
BIO 140, BIO 150, BIO 245, and BIO 290 are supported by the PASS program.

Chemistry PASS support, free
CHEM 120, CHEM 131, CHEM 132, CHEM 241 and CHEM 242 are supported by the PASS program.

Chemistry Tutoring, free
The Science and Math Learning Center (SMLC) provides support for the 1st and 2nd year Chemistry courses. Tutoring is drop-in, so no appointment is needed.
The SMLC supports the following chemistry courses: CHEM 120, 131, 132, 241, 242.
Chemistry Tutoring, paid
CHEM 120, CHEM 131, CHEM 132, CHEM 241, and CHEM 242 tutoring is offered through The Student Affiliates of the American Chemical Society.

Computer Science Tutoring, free
The Department of Computer Science provides student Lab Assistants for 100-level CS courses.
Lab Assistants, as selected by the Department, are assigned courses and instructors.
Hours of operation: Evenings and on weekends for students who need help in CS courses.
Economics Tutoring, free
The Madison Economics Club offers free tutoring for ECON 200 and ECON 201.
Economics Tutoring, paid

The Education Support Center offers free tutoring for the Praxis Core Math exam and the Virginia Communication and Literacy Assessment (VCLA) Reading and Writing exams that will fulfill the Entry Assessment Requirements.

The Finance Tutoring Cadre provides free peer tutoring for introductory Finance courses.

Free peer tutoring is available in select languages.
The Language Resource Center provides a space for JMU students to listen to audio, watch video, and use computers to further their language studies.

MSS support, free
Multilingual Student Services (MSS) provides academic English support to multilingual learners. You can make an appointment for a one-on-one consultation with an MSS professional or peer educator. Typical sessions may cover one or a few of the following topics:
- Starting and working on assignments
- Writing in U.S. American academic English
- Cultural questions and comparisons
- Prioritizing Information in the U.S.
- Learning vocabulary
- Reading effectively
- Speaking fluently
- Developing grammar
- Connecting with an advocate
Multilingual students can also receive language support while writing a thesis.
Music Tutoring, free
The School of Music provides department-paid tutors for students enrolled in Music Theory or Music History.
Their tutors and availability are subject to change each semester.
