Call for Applicants
The Center for Global Engagement seeks two professionals within the Student Affairs to serve as program director for one of the two New Dukes Abroad study abroad programs taking place in Germany and Guatemala. New Dukes Abroad is a 10-day, 3-credit experience for incoming first-year students, and takes place in late July / early August of each academic year. These programs are designed as a way for incoming students to build connections with peers and administrators prior to the start of classes to help ease the transition to college.
The program in Germany, titled “New Dukes Abroad: The Exploration of Migration and Culture in Germany,” centers on the history and culture of refugee populations and migratory patterns on the border of Germany and Poland. The program in Guatemala, titled “New Dukes Abroad: Navigating New Experiences in Guatemala,” focuses on student development and the transition to university life while simultaneously understanding what it’s like to be a responsible global citizen in a multicultural society. Topic area expertise at the time of application is not a requirement. Both programs have well-established partnerships on-site who assist in the leadership of the programs.
General Description
Program directors are primarily responsible for leading all aspects of the New Dukes Abroad program including recruiting and preparing students, managing a program budget, maintaining positive relationships with on-site partners and vendors, instructing a 3-credit course, and supporting students while on-site.

This position requires a three-year commitment and is designed as follows:
- Year 1 – Assistant Program Director: New program directors will shadow and provide support to the Primary Program Director. Travel on program required.
- Year 2 – Primary Program Director: Full program leadership with support from the Assistant Program Director. Travel on program required.
- Year 3 – Outgoing Program Director: Former program directors will provide support as needed to the Primary Program Director and the Assistant Program Director. No program travel required, but may be needed in emergencies or due to large enrollment.
Qualifications
Required:
- A&P faculty within the Division of Student Affairs
- Master’s degree
- Permission from supervisor and department director
- Commitment to a three-year cycle
- Organizational skills
- Comfortability in MS Excel
- Enthusiasm for international education
Preferred:
- Experience with international travel
- Interest in the country and familiarity with its culture
- Language skills (not a requirement, but helpful)
NOTE: Those who have previously served as program director for the New Dukes Abroad programs will be eligible to serve again on the same program after three full years have passed since serving as the Outgoing Program director (i.e. An Outgoing Program Director who served in July 2025 would be eligible to be an Assistant Program Director in July 2029).
Compensation
Total compensation for this role will be up to $2,000, and split by specific role during each year of the cycle as follows:
- Assistant Program Director: $500, plus travel expenses
- Primary Program Director: $1,000, plus travel expenses
- Outgoing Program Director: $500
Compensation is dependent upon sufficient enrollment in programs and not guaranteed if program budget cannot fully support total amount.
Selection Process
Prior to submitting the application, all candidates must discuss this opportunity with their immediate supervisor and department director and receive approval.
Interested candidates should complete the application, consisting of short-answer questions, on Terra Dotta. The selection committee, consisting of representatives from study abroad, Student Affairs, international accounting, previous program directors, and previous students on the program will review all completed materials.
Typically, the application will open in March with selections made in May for the following academic year. (Ex: Candidates interested in serving in this leadership position starting in July 2026 will apply in March 2025.)
NOTE: This year, an accelerated search will take place for leadership this starting this summer (July 2025) with applications opening in December 2024 and closing on January 17, 2025.
