Through the UHC Volunteer Program, students will gain an oversight of the clinical operation of a healthcare setting while developing a sense of empathy for the patient. Students will gain a sense of the value of teamwork. This is NOT a shadowing opportunity. Opportunities include three different areas of the Health Center.

• Clinical areas (includes General Medicine and Urgent Care)
  • Assist staff with patient care, including: taking brief helath history, reconciling allergies, medications and chronic conditions, obtaining vital signs (blood pressue, pulse, respirations, and temperature) and keeping exam rooms clean and stocked.
  • Requires CNA/EMT/MA/PCT certification or training prior to applying.
• Front Office areas
  • Greet students as they enter the Health Center.
  • Involves good communication and customer service skills
  • No previous experience or training is required.
• Lab area
  • Maintain clean linens and instruments for assigned clinics.
  • Assist lab staff with running in-house labs.
  • No previous experience or training is required.

Applications are accepted each semester for the following semester.  Applications will be reviewed and selected based on availability, qualifications and number of open slots needing filled.   Qualified applicants will be contacted, and a link will be sent to select a time for interview.   A major in a health-related field is required as well as completion of two semesters at JMU.  

Our shifts are 7:45 a.m. - 11:45 a.m. and 12:45 p.m. - 4:45 p.m. on M T W F

And 8:45 a.m. - 11:45 a.m. and 12:45 p.m. - 4:45 p.m. on Thursdays

New volunteers begin their mandatory training each semester before classes begin, with an extensive online training course, as well as on-site training.
