You are invited to apply to join the X-Labs team as a Faculty Associate for Cross-Disciplinary Pedagogy! At JMU X-Labs, we believe that collaboration sparks innovation - and we want you to be part of this transformative journey! We are a space on JMU's campus for faculty, staff, students, and external partners to come together as traditionally separate fields to solve complex problems that require different disciplines and perspectives. This is your chance to work alongside talented colleagues and students from across the university, develop unique courses that are co-located in X-Labs, and collaboratively tackle real-world challenges through design thinking and backward design.

Here's What's In It For You:
- Elevate Your Teaching Toolbox - Learn and apply pedagogical strategies like cross-disciplinary collaboration, design thinking, team teaching, and project-based learning.
- Collaborate Across Campus - Partner with faculty and students from diverse disciplines to collaboratively solve complex problems.
- Reimagine Your Pedagogy - Gain expertise in revitalizing teaching methods that create dynamic, team-based learning experiences that bring fresh perspectives to the classroom.
The Faculty Associate roles are 2-year appointments that come with a stipend of $3,600 per semester, plus a summer stipend.
Schedule - Year 1:
- Summer 2025: Participate in a one-week design thinking sprint with JMU X-Labs
- Fall 2025: Shadow an X-Labs course to experience the unique collaborative pedagogy
- Spring 2026: Put your new skills to the test and lead design-thinking activities in an X-Labs course
Schedule - Year 2:
- Summer 2026: Mentor new faculty associates
- Fall 2026: Serve as lead design-thinking facilitator in an X-Labs course
- Spring 2027: Serve as lead design-thinking facilitator in an X-Labs course
Expectations
- Assist in shaping X-Labs' annual Innovation Summit, a celebration in late spring that features the work of the students, faculty, and external partners
- Build and strengthen external partner relations
- Collect data in courses for assessment
- Conclude your experience in the program with a deliverable that captures your insights and contributions
