What do I do at the Counseling Center?

As an Intake and Crisis Clinician, I provide intake and crisis support to students during walk-in hours at the Counseling Center, offer treatment recommendations, and provide referrals that best fit the needs of each student. When offering support to students who are experiencing a crisis, this can include connecting them to resources to help ensure their safety. Additionally, I consult with parents, students, faculty, staff, and others who are concerned about the distressed, unusual, problematic, or potentially harmful behavior of a JMU student. I also maintain a small caseload of individual clients.

What's it like to work with me?

How many therapists does it take to change a lightbulb? One. But only if the lightbulb wants to change. In the therapy room, I provide each client a safe space to make positive change in their lives. The client is in control and must want to make change in their lives. I’m here to facilitate the journey. I like to meet the client where they are, offering a judgement free zone, reinforcing individual strengths and resources, and utilizing interventions to meet the individual needs of each client. I utilize Person-Centered, Humanistic approach, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Motivational Interviewing (MI), and Mindfulness, while also providing Trauma-Informed Care. I also believe that humor is a strong therapeutic tool when appropriate. I have clinical interests in LGBTQIA+, social justice, multicultural issues, as well as grief and loss.

What do I do at JMU outside of the Counseling Center?

Outside of the Counseling Center, I enjoy biking, swimming, exploring nature, and spending time with my wife and two boys. I volunteer with various organizations and boards, including coaching for the Harrisonburg Little League.
