Program Description
There are two Costa Rica FLOW programs, with slight differences. The PURA program is in May and the VIDA program is in June. This page is for the May program (PURA). The June program can be found here.
Costa Rica FLOW PURA gets its name from the Costa Rican mantra "pura vida," which is associated with a sense of well-being, positivity, and gratitude. During the PURA session, we will emphasize "Promoting Universal Resiliency and Awareness." Explore the wonders of Costa Rica and immerse yourself in the Pura Vida (Pure Life). In Costa Rica FLOW PURA, you will learn about lifestyle habits that promote longevity and happiness through resiliency and awareness. Students will experience Costa Rica's rich geography, traveling from the Atlantic to the Pacific coast, learning about its agricultural and cultural traditions, hiking and sound bathing in the rainforest, and practicing yoga, meditation, and reflection on the beach. You'll also learn about conservation efforts and health promotion in various communities, all while gaining life skills that will help you become more mentally and physically fit.
Students will collaborate over this three-week study abroad program, learning about social determinants of health and behavioral factors through three modes of learning. First, students will learn health theories through direct instruction, participating in traditional lectures, readings, guest speakers, videos, and tours. Second, students will dive into experiential learning, including data collection, fieldwork, farm tours, cooking classes, hiking, yoga, meditation, and other activities. Finally, students will engage in project-based learning through reflections and the design of interdisciplinary wellness agendas. Throughout the program, you'll integrate health and behavioral concepts to better understand energy-balance related behaviors and embrace the FLOW.

Accommodations
Accommodations will be provided for students through various lodging options, including dormitory-style housing, hotels, motels, and eco-lodges with internet access. Students will be expected to share double rooms.
All meals are included in the program fee. While Costa Rica boasts a rich culinary history and culture, students with restrictive diets might find fewer options compared to the United States. In locations with shared kitchen spaces, we may prepare communal meals, also covered by the program fee.
Additional Items to Consider
Some coursework is required prior to departure.
Some activities will require physical exertion, including hiking in the rainforest, yoga, and walking.
A raincoat or light waterproof jacket is necessary, as it will be the rainy season. Hiking boots or sturdy closed-toe shoes are also essential. S
tudents should bring laptops. (Please apply even if you don't have one.)
Outlets and voltage are the same as in North America.
Much of the in-country communication is conducted via text, so students should bring their cellphones and consider an international calling plan.
