Program Description

Pre-study abroad preparation for class presentations. Classroom lectures, personal reflection, excursions to healthcare agencies, guided tours, project-based learning in a community, and cultural immersion. Students will attend regular lectures in classroom and clinical settings, enhancing cultural outings in South Africa.

NSG 490 - In this course, students will be immersed in the history and culture of communities within South Africa to enhance knowledge and understanding of healthcare challenges unique to this population and how health policy is established and implemented. Students will examine culture, lifestyle, and health policy and its impact on health, chronic illness, and well-being. An emphasis will be placed on understanding healthcare challenges unique to South Africa and healthcare policy development.

NSG 684- This course will explore global healthcare systems. Graduate students will examine interprofessional leadership characteristics and how they address health needs across settings. Students will explore physical and social environments to understand individual, societal, and population-based influences on health and well-being.

South Africa is a vibrant country with a rich cultural heritage that reflects a blend of African, European, and Asian influences. The nation's diverse population celebrates a variety of traditions, languages, and customs, creating a dynamic cultural landscape.

Stellenbosch University, located in the scenic town of Stellenbosch, is one of South Africa's leading educational institutions. The Stellenbosch University School of Nursing is renowned for its commitment to excellence in nursing education, research, and community service, preparing students to meet the healthcare needs of the diverse South African population.

The country's medical care system is a mix of public and private sectors, offering a wide range of healthcare services. While the public sector provides essential services to the majority, the private sector is known for its high standards and advanced medical facilities.

Iconic landmarks like Table Mountain in Cape Town symbolize South Africa's natural beauty and are significant to both locals and tourists. This flat-topped mountain is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and offers breathtaking views, making it a cultural and recreational hub.

Accommodations

Accommodations will be provided for students through hotels or student housing and houses with internet access.

Students will be allocated a weekly meal stipend that will cover approximately 14 meals per week.

Additional Items to Consider

Students will be given letters of authorization from Stellenbosch University to support the visit and satisfy VISA requirements.

COVID vaccination required.

Applicant Criteria

Applicants must have a GPA minimum of 2.8

Open to juniors, seniors and grad students in all majors.

Open to JMU students only
