Federal Regulations and Enrollment into Programs Designed to Lead to Licensure

A jurisdiction’s professional licensing boards require applicants for licensure to meet multiple requirements, including specific educational requirements. An institution’s program might meet all of the educational requirements in one jurisdiction, but not another (for example, an applicant might need to complete an additional class).

Federal regulations require James Madison University to disclose whether its licensure-related degree programs meet or do not meet U.S. jurisdictions’ (states and territories) educational requirements for licensure (34 CFR 668.43(a)(5)). Furthermore, per 34 CFR 668.14(b)(32), JMU must, prior to your enrollment into a licensure-related program, ensure you plan to pursue licensure and employment in a jurisdiction in which the program meets that jurisdiction's academic requirements. Please carefully read the information below and follow the link below to the JMU Professional Licensure Program Status by Jurisdiction Index.

The office of the Associate Provost for Online Strategy maintains jurisdiction-by-jurisdiction information for students and prospective students on its state authorization web pages.

What You Need to Know before Enrollment

Before you enroll in an academic program designed to lead to licensure, you should consider where you want to pursue licensure and employment after graduation. Professional licensing boards in most U.S. states and territories (jurisdictions) require applicants to have graduated from a program with specific courses and learning experiences. These academic requirements vary across jurisdictions.

You should know what a particular jurisdiction’s licensing board requires and then determine if the programs in which you have interest meet those requirements. Federal law requires that we ensure you plan to pursue licensure and employment in a state in which our program meets those requirements.

How to Determine Where Programs Meet Requirements

We can help you find the information you need!

Refer to the JMU Professional Licensure Program Status by Jurisdiction Index to determine if a JMU program in which you have interest meets or does not meet the educational requirements specified by the associated licensing board in a specific jurisdiction. Alternatively, you can view the status of all programs in a specific jurisdiction. Instructions for searching the Index are available on the Index page.

Enrolled students who change their location to a different state or territory must notify JMU by contacting the University Registrar's Office.
