Here at the Center for Faculty Innovation, we believe that good teaching is inclusive teaching. We also recognize that inclusive teaching comes in many different forms; there isn’t one-size-fits-all or one right way to be an inclusive teacher.

Our classrooms are filled with a diverse range of students with many different identities, experiences, and opinions; as instructors, we also add to the rich mosaics of our classrooms. Inclusive teaching—that is, anticipating and designing learning experiences with a diverse student population in mind—can help all students feel a sense of belonging at JMU and prepare for the world beyond.

All of our programs support, in some way or another, inclusive teaching approaches. But, in the past, we have offered specific programs to dive more deeply into this skill set, including a semester-long Inclusive Teaching Institute; tailored programming for specific colleges and departments (such as CHBS on neurodiversity); and numerous one-off workshops, roundtables, presentations, reading groups, and more on topics ranging from first-generation college students to large classes to universal design.
