MHFA Trainings
Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) trainings are offered several times throughout each semester to interested groups. These trainings are offered in partnership with the CFI and Talent Development, Balanced Dukes, and leadership among the various colleges. Trainers aim to make trainings as accessible as possible, working with partnerships to determine location, dates, and times.
Students’ experiences with mental health challenges and crises can often show up in the classroom or advising meetings. Faculty and advisers understandably may not know how to respond and find such situations overwhelming. Just as CPR training provides skills related to intervening with a cardiac episode, MHFA training allows any adult to respond to others experiencing mental health challenges or crises.
The training consists of a 2-hour asynchronous module, covering topics related to mental health (examples include trauma, depression and anxiety, and substance use) and a full one-day in-person training. Participants will leave the training with MHFA certification, and no additional follow-up activity is required.
You can find general information about the training on the Mental Health First Aid website. The website also has testimonials about the utility of MHFA at UNC-Chapel Hill.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the training, participants will
- Build knowledge around topics related to mental health challenges and crises, including trauma, depression and anxiety, substance use, and psychosis
- Develop skills through a five-step conceptual framework to provide assessment for risk of harm, listening nonjudgmentally, and giving reassurance and appropriate referral information
- Apply information and skillset in response to situations students may bring into the classroom
