Accounting

For 10 weeks beginning Feb. 4, 2022, twenty (20) Masters in Accounting students provided free tax return preparation services as part of the Internal Revenue Service’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. The students assisted a total of 495 clients, filing federal and state tax returns for 2021 and prior years (when needed). The clients’ average income was $28,000. The total refunds generated was $841,185, including earned income tax credit of $228,846.

Clinical and School Psychology Doctoral Program

AWARDS:

Shelly-Ann Peart James received the Association for Play Therapy 2021 Conference Scholarship.
The Foundation for Play Therapy awards three competitive (3) full scholarships to attend the Annual APT International Conference. Scholarship recipients receive: accommodations at conference hotel for 6 nights, complimentary registration for the entire conference, and a $250 stipend to defray meals and other expenses.The approximate value of each scholarship is $2,400.

PRESENTATIONS:

Hannah Jarrett and Allison deBlois presented at the Virginia Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (VACES) conference in Richmond regarding LGBTQ+ Affirmative Play Therapy. Both students also received a grant from VACES to support their work.

Hannah Jarrett presented with faculty the poster Promoting Healthy Attachments: Incorporating the Wisdom of Nature in Play Therapy at the Association for Play Therapy International Conference in Little Rock, Arkansas.

Allison deBois will be presenting a poster at the Association of Humanistic Counseling (AHC) conference in Nashville regarding Affirmative Practice in Counseling and is serving on the AHC Harm Reduction Taskforce to closely examine conference safety for graduate students and new professionals.

Natalie Realubit and Genevieve Askin provided crisis support at Bridgewater College after the campus shooting this year.

Becky Johnston and Monica Cooper have been partnering with school counselors at J. Frank Hillyard middle school to create resource guides that address specific issues students are experiencing. They are focusing on: Race, LGBTQ mental health, trauma, social skills, family concerns, and, anxiety/depression. The resource guides emphasize developmental considerations, individual counseling, and group counseling for each topic.

Mia Greenwald was selected for a Graduate Fellowship in the amount of $6,000.

Sarah Phillips received a Professional Fellowship Award from the Virginia Museum of fine Art for 2022-23 for $8,000.

Kinesiology

COMMUNITY OR PROFESSIONAL IMPACT:

Carolyn Ludwigson led a new collaboration with the Young Children’s Program at JMU to offer a 10-week physical activity and nutrition program in each of the four classrooms over the 2021-2022 academic year.

Catie Cavallaro led a team of undergraduate students in holding a no-cost, 11-week running program at Waterman Elementary school for over 50 girls in grades 3 and 4. 

Catie Cavallaro led a team of undergraduate students to plan and implement Movin’ and Groovin’ Day, which invited over 50 young females from the Harrisonburg-Rockingham Community to come learn about health and wellness.

Sarah Ridgeway and a team of undergraduate students conducted fitness testing for the Miller School of Albermarle, where they assessed different pulmonary function outcomes as well as provided VO2max testing for athletes

She was also awarded funds from the College of Education to fund the registration for the conference. The amount from the College of Education was $269.00.

Strategic Leadership Studies Doctoral Program

AWARDS:

Emily Irungu was also awarded an ARNOVA Conference Scholarship for the 50th Annual Conference November 18-20 in Atlanta, Georgia. Emily presented research with faculty regarding finance theory. The scholarship covered conference registration fees of $190.

Maureen Malomba was selected as one of 24 participants for ARNOVA's Graduate Diversity Scholars and Leaders Professional Development Workshop held during the 50th annual conference November 18-20, 2021. The program focused on helping emerging scholars from underrepresented groups prepare to enter the field of nonprofit, philanthropic, and voluntary action studies. The award provided a $1,000 scholarship and support to offset travel expenses to attend the workshops and conference.

Maureen Malomba was also 1 of 7 faculty accepted to the Fall 2021 JMU African, African American, and Diaspora Studies Center Critical Perspectives and Pedagogies Institute. Every semester AAAD selects up to 12 qualified faculty members to attend this highly iterative 8-session classes. The AAAD Critical Perspectives and Pedagogies Institute is a new annual 8-week institute that offers JMU faculty participants the chance to dive deeply into the histories, philosophies, methodologies, and pedagogies of African, African American and Diaspora Studies. The acceptance awarded Maureen a $250 stipend.

Maureen Malomba is a recipient of the Meet the Moment for Women and Leadership award, an award that recognizes the contributions her presentation at the ILA 6th Women and Leadership Conference. This award will cover her registration fee and a reception.

Kennedy Musyoka was awarded an ARNOVA Conference Scholarship & Travel Grant Award to attend the 50th Annual Conference November 18-20, 2021 in Atlanta, Georgia. The scholarship and grant covered provided $340 in funds to offset travel fees.

Kennedy was also awarded a $500 travel grant from the office of Research & Scholarship to attend ARNOVA.

COMMUNITY OR PROFESSIONAL IMPACT:

Tiffany Brutus (Doctoral Candidate) is serving on the Board of Directors for the Parent Educational Advocacy Training Center (PEATC). PEATC builds positive futures for Virginia’s children by working collaboratively with families, schools and communities in order to improve opportunities for excellence in education and success in school and community life with a special focus on children with disabilities.

Maureen Malomba, third year SSLS student, is serving as the Co-Chair of the new graduate school international organization Graduate Leaders Organization to Build Alliance and Links (GLOBAL). The purpose of this organization is to (1) build a supportive community for the international graduate students and (2) give them a voice by sharing specific issues and concerns with the JMU community.

Jalal Maqableh (Doctoral Candidate) holds multiple appointments in various local nonprofit organizations. He currently serves as Treasurer for the Fairfield Center and holds a seat on Harrisonburg’s International Festival Committee. Jalal is also participating in this year’s session of the The Harrisonburg Citizen Academy- a 13-week program which runs from August through November is designed to teach residents about the city and the services it provides.

Jalal Maqableh also played a role on the international political stage this summer! He assisted the King of Jordan’s media team with arranging interviews with political analysts in Washington D.C. during King Abdullah’s visit with President Biden in July of this year. The interviews Jalal helped arrange discussed cooperation between Jordan and the U.S. on approaching current issues in the Middle East.

Kennedy Musyoka, second year SSLS student, is serving as an office for JMU’s chapter of Bridges International, an organization connecting graduate students from around the world. Kennedy is also serving as secretary of the ARNOVA Nonprofit Finance and Financial Management section and member of the organization’s strategic planning team.

Elizabeth Narewood authored a policy brief on Lynchburg Beacon of Hope: Building a Collaborative Framework for Student Success which was published on @College_Promise news and insights. Her current research interesets include: exploring the relationship between leadership and postsecondary student success; analyzing education trends and the economic impacts on communities; and investigating the dynamics of collaborations between non-profits, eduation, and government organizations. 

Doctoral Candidate Elizabeth Narehood's policy brief “Virginia’s G3 Initiative: A Workforce Development Statewide Promise” was published on the College Promise Campaign news site in November 2021. Elizabeth’s brief examines Governor Northam’s campaign for free community college as part of the G3 initiative, short for “Get a Skill, Get a Job, Get Ahead.” In addition to tuition-free community college, G3 seeks to place critical supports for low- and middle-income students while targeting education programs for high-demand careers to drive the state’s economic, social, and civic prosperity overall, and aid in Virginia’s economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.

AWARDS:

Erica Cason was awarded the Dawbarn Education Award 2021/2022 (which recognizes educators who make a lasting impact on students in Stuanton, Waynesboro, and Augusta County), completed a professional development presentation to the teachers at Stuarts Draft Elementary School on the use of Problem-Based Learning, and will serve as the administrative intern for her school's 2021/2022 summer school program. 

COMMUNITY OR PROFESSIONAL IMPACT:

Kajsa Svarfvar is currently serving on a new committee for the school division that is looking at Secondary Grading Practices.
