Shannon Tumelty joined the UREC team in July 2021 and currently serves as the Assistant Director for Intramural Sports & Youth Programs. As the Assistant Director for Intramural Sports and Youth Programs, she oversees the Coordinator and Graduate Assistant for Intramural Sports and Youth Programs along with general oversight of both program areas.
Shannon received her Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Business Management from James Madison University in 2014. Shannon continued her journey in collegiate recreation at James Madison University where she earned her Master of Science degree in Sport and Recreation Leadership with a concentration in Campus Recreation. She also served as the Graduate Assistant for Intramural Sports and Special Events at UREC from 2014-2016. After graduating, Shannon took a job with Duke University Recreation in Durham, North Carolina as the Coordinator for Intramural Sports. After two years in that position, she then took a job as the Assistant Director for Sport Programs at the University of Iowa. During her time in Iowa City, she oversaw Intramural Sports and Sport Club programming for Recreational Services. In addition to that, she had the privilege of being a liaison for Unified Sports programming between the Sport Programs area and Special Olympics Iowa (SOIA).
Shannon is originally from Canada but was raised in Northern Virginia. She has two cats, Corabella & Cookie, and currently lives in Harrisonburg, VA. She loves to read, play basketball, volunteer at her church, and spend time with family and friends. She also enjoys traveling to see her immediate and extended family, who mostly reside in Ireland. Shannon is also a Godmother to her niece Rose and friend’s daughter, Eleanor. Her favorite aspect about UREC is working with people who are passionate about what they do and are supportive of each other’s aspirations in life.
