To ensure a safe, welcoming, and motivating environment at UREC, participants must comply with University Policies and UREC policies posted online and in the facilities. Membership privileges may be temporarily or permanently suspended for participants who do not comply with posted policies or staff requests. 

UREC Facility Policies
  • Secure your personal belongings. UREC is not responsible for personal belongings or valuables.
  • No bikes, skateboards, longboards or inline skates.
  • Pets (including Emotional Support Animals) are not permitted, with the exception of Service Animals.
  • Shirts/tops must be worn in all areas except for the Aquatics Center.
  • No glass bottles or gum. Only water or sport drinks in re-sealable sports bottles are permitted in activity areas.  Food and other beverages must be consumed in the Atrium or study/lounge spaces.
  • This is an alcohol, cannabis and nicotine free facility. No vaping permitted. Individuals suspected to be under the influence of alcohol, cannabis or illegal drugs will not be permitted access.
  • No spitting, profane language, physical altercations or intentionally creating health hazards.
  • Advertising, sponsorship and media activities require advance approval.
  • Consent is required to take photos or videos of other participants. The use of camera equipment (such as tripods) requires advance approval.
  • Children 15 and under may only use facilities during family hours and must remain in the company of their host at all times.
  • Individuals hosting guests are responsible for the conduct of their guests.
UREC Sport and Exercise Injury Policies
  • James Madison University / University Recreation (UREC) does not provide health or injury protection insurance to participants in any UREC programs, services and facilities.  
  • The user/participant assumes the risks inherent in all sport, recreation and fitness programs and is solely responsible for the costs associated with the care and treatment of any injury sustained.  
  • Specific programs that meet the criteria of a high-risk activity where the potential gravity of harm may be high will require the signing of an informed consent stating that the participant understands the risks inherent in that sport or activity. These risks are assigned to parents of minors that are not JMU students, who either must be present or have signed an informed consent on the minor’s behalf.
