Getting Around our Facilities
James Madison University Recreation Center is committed to ensuring accessibility for all individuals, including those with disabilities. UREC features:
- Ramps to access UREC's main entrance and the Adventure Center Rental exterior pick-up
- Elevators to access different levels of the center, ensuring that all areas are reachable for everyone
- Designated accessible parking spaces
- Universal bathrooms, located on the first floor, are single occupancy gender-neutral bathrooms equipped with a toilet with grab bars, a shower (3rd bathroom is equipped with a bench) and a changing table.
UPARK features:
- Ramps to access all areas

Chair lifts to main pool and multi-activity pool. Lifeguards are trained to assist with the chair lifts.

Lifejackets, kickboards and floating job belts are available.

Swim lessons are available for all ages.
Goalball
Goalball is a silent team sport where players score points by rolling a ball with bells into an opponent's net. Participants play on their hands and knees and use their hearing to block shots.
To play, please email the Coordinator of Operations 48 hours ahead of time for set up.
Sitting Volleyball
Sitting volleyball is a team sport with the objective of sending the ball over the net and grounding it in the opponent's court to score points and prevent the same effort by the opponent.
To play, please ask the Recreation staff to set up the net.
Sport Chairs (Basketball and other sports)
Wheelchairs are available at the Equipment Center. The current chairs do not have lap belt or leg straps. We are in the process of purchasing additional adaptive sports equipment.
Learn To Play
Every month, the Accessibility and Inclusion Committee at UREC will host a day of Paralympic Sport.
Drop-in will be available from 1 - 5 p.m. and 6 - 11:30 p.m.
The Learn to Play event will be from 5 - 6 p.m.

- All strength machines are equipped with illustrated diagrams detailing proper use.
- QR codes on many machines link to videos with sound, which also demonstrate proper use.
- Fitness staff are available to provide assistance with equipment, spotting and moving any bench seats.

Fitness Programs
- Fitness Orientation: 1-on-1 orientation session with a UREC Fitness Manager that will be personalized to meet your goals and can include any of the following: tour of the facility, Fitness Center policy and procedure, how to use a piece of equipment, how to perform a specific lift or movement, and basic fitness program guidelines.
- Personal Training
Group Exercise offers over 100 classes each week during the semester. All level are welcome to join. Group Exercise instructors may offer guidance and modification to some exercise. The Coordinator of Group Exercise is happy to meet to discuss your intrests and needs to help you find what class or accomodation may work for you.
Intramural Sports offers Co-Rec and Open Leagues and Tournaments in competitive and non-competitive sports. The Assistant Director of Intramural Sports is happy to meet to discuss your interests and needs to help you find what club or accommodation may work for you. Intramural Sports collaborates with the Special Olympics College Club to offer Unified Intramural Leagues.
Sport Clubs offer various ways to compete in sports. The Assistant Director of Sport Clubs is happy to meet to discuss your interests and needs to help you find what club or accommodation may work for you.
