Gateway for JMU Students
The university is committed to creating a supportive, active community that fosters learning. The Gateway for JMU students was created to connect members of our community with resources that can help them build community, succeed academically, and care for their mental and physical health and well-being. Examples of information provided on the Gateway include reserving study spaces, accessing subject/course-specific help, finding a club or organization to join, roommate conflict help, self-care resources, campus transportation, reporting harm or policy violations, and upcoming campus events.
Campus Resources
OSARP strives to partner with JMU and Harrisonburg communities for the success of our students. Many times students enter our office with questions regarding other offices on campus or in Harrisonburg. We've linked some of the most commonly asked about resources below:
Mental Health & Wellbeing Resources
The university offers several services to support student’s mental health and wellbeing, from individual counseling to psychiatric services. We’ve linked some helpful resources below:
- Counseling Center Workshops - Examples of topics covered: dealing with depression, homesickness, managing perfectionism, understanding self-harm, and animal assisted therapy.
- Health and Wellness Programs - Well Dukes offers a wide variety of introductory health and wellness classes and programs. Some of these programs include Party Smart, a Sober Curious Panel, and a Green Dot Bystander Intervention Overview. Additionally, Well Dukes offers Wellness Coaching for both substance misuse and sexual health.

The Oasis offers a quite space with massage chairs, yoga mats, and other calming features. Substance Resources
The university focuses on building campus culture to include personal responsibilities, scholarship and citizenship, while educating students about health and safety hazards of high-risk substance use. As such, OSARP uses four strategies (“The Big Four”) to address alcohol and other drug use in our campus community, both on and off-campus, with the goal to provide education, learning, and consistent accountability in order to promote student success.
Additionally, resources are available throughout the university and the City of Harrisonburg/Rockingham County communities to assist students who may need additional support regarding the use or abuse of alcohol or other drugs. Examples of campus programs include (these programs may be assigned as the result of an OSARP process, but self-referrals are encouraged and program fees are waived, if applicable):
